Hi, I'm Christina And This Is My Story So Far...

My Story So far- The Design Parlour-06.jpg

Hello 2019!

It’s my first official day back in the studio and I’ve decided to spend a little time before I get back into it all, to reflect on my journey so far.

The last three years have been such a roller coaster ride with some of the best yet most challenging times to date. I’ve wanted to give up and throw in the towel. Other times I’ve felt overwhelmed with excitement!

My goal for the new year is to create more connection. Get out from behind the scenes and share more of myself. I feel like a great way to start this off would be to firstly tell my own story and share the lessons I’ve learnt along the way.

I’ve taken risks, made mistakes, learnt to let go of what doesn't serve me and realised that sometimes we just need to let the universe do its thing.

It all began when…

I took a leap and quit my 9-5 design job

Flash back to 2016. I’m sitting at my office desk at my cushy 9-5 job as a graphic and textile designer in homewares. It’s a great job, but it doesn't fulfil me…

If you’ve ever been in this position (or maybe are currently) the “I can’t do this anymore’ whisper at the back of your mind, only gets louder and louder….

I couldn't face another day of doing what didn’t serve me or challenge me anymore. I decided to just take a leap of faith and quit to run my bedding label that I had just launched, on a full time basis.

I was young and a little naive to what I was about to experience, but I’m damn grateful for that, because I may not have chosen to take the risk otherwise! The book The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte also gave me a huge push of inspiration to do this- highly recommend if you’re looking to take a risk!

There’s usually no perfect time to leave a 9-5 or take a risk in life and we could think of 100 reasons why we should delay it… But my advice is don’t wait!

I truly believe when you say yes to your true passion and purpose, the universe hears you and provides you with opportunities that are aligned with your ultimate goal and dream.

It just takes a lot of patience and trust…

I launched my dream label only to realise it wasn't for me

For anyone running their own fashion/ homewares or any product based label- hats off to you!

The late nights searching for a suitable manufacturer. Receiving crap samples after weeks of waiting for them. Organising a photographer, model and stylist for a photoshoot, only for your pre production samples to be delayed… I've experienced the realities of running a label and it ain’t easy! It was possibly the most challenging thing I’ve ever experienced.

Running any sort of business is challenging, but I believe in the end it should all be worth it and totally rewarding.

However I really didn’t feel this way…

I loved designing prints and developing ranges, but in actual fact, this wasn’t really the bulk of what I was spending my time on.

My passion for my brand slowly began to fizzle. I felt sad that I had spent so much time and money on something only to become frustrated and unsatisfied with it.

It wasn't an easy decision to let my brand go, but in time I learnt that…

It’s ok to pivot my idea of success

Feeling at absolute surrender to the universe, I decided to hit up good old seek and try my luck at a career pivot from designing textiles for homewares to fashion.

Deep down, I’d always loved fashion print design, but my limiting beliefs told me ‘you could never do that.’

I had no experience working in fashion, but I truely believe when you challenge you own limiting beliefs, show up and surrender to a plan greater than your own, the universe can really surprise you!

Two weeks later, I found myself working for one of the biggest women’s fashion retailer in Australia. I was over the moon with this opportunity, but boy was it a huge learning curve!

However, I was determined to stick it out and make it work because this time the lows were totally worth it for the highs!

I discovered that helping others with what I had learnt was my true purpose

It’s 2017 and I’m working part time as a print designer for another Australian fashion retailer. This gave me some time to work on my side hustle.

I still carried a strong desire to do my own thing, however I didn't really know what that would exactly be…

At about the same time, I was suffering from a broken heart ( I don’t think any story is complete without some form of heartbreak!)

As much as it hurts, there is something so magical that happens when you’re healing a broken heart. It forces you to do a lot of self-care you may not normally do and at the same time, you’re building a new vision for your life.

I spent time thinking about what value I have to offer others and how I could use my creativity and skills to support someone else’s dream.

I looked inward for the answers and listened to my inner guide. Reading the book, The Universe Has Your Back by Gabrielle Bernstein, really helped me learn how powerful this can be. It totally changed my thought process for the better.

I’d learnt so much about the design process, manufacturing and what it really takes to build a product based label. I loved designing for fashion and felt passionate about small businesses and startups, having had one myself.

I put this all together and built The Design Parlour to what it is today- My mission being, to help creative business owners build their fashion dreams and to tell their story through design.

Creating artwork that represents a fashion label’s vision to a T and seeing my clients so over joyed with the end result, is what really lights my fire! I can honestly say I feel so aligned with my ‘why’.

I took another big leap in July 2018 to run The Design Parlour full time. The ‘I can’t do this anymore’ whispers caught up to me again and I found myself in the same position I was two years ago. It’s funny how the same situations re occur until we say ‘yes’ to our true calling.

Success is not a destination, but a state of mind

In writing this post, I’m not saying that my story is complete- It’s still being written and I can’t wait to see what the new year will bring!

I’ve got big plans for The Design Parlour, but through out my journey I’ve realised that you can’t plan everything and sometimes you need to make way for the universe to do it’s thing and lead you to where you’re meant to be. Often it knows better than we do…

The key is to feel the way you desire to feel in your vision of success, right now.

Embrace each moment and see it as an opportunity to do this, because the journey just keeps on going and going- we  grow, we learn, we make mistakes and pivot our ideas.

There is no one destination that we’re waiting to reach, but one amazing journey that we need to be present for today!

Never stop dreaming,

Christina xx
